One of the most unforgettable times during my cadetship was our visit at Terneuzen, Netherlands. The home of the legendary “The Flying Dutchman”.
Terneuzen is located southwest of Netherlands belonging to the province of Zeeland, the city is also known as Neuzen. The city boasts of its strategic location being the port on the waterways to Ghents, in modern day Belgium.
It was a bright sunday morning and Ternuezen was taking its peaceful weekend sleep. It is sunday-holiday in this part of the world so we had all the streets for ourselves to walk around and enjoy .One of our walkathon-stop over was at the park where we luckily stumbled upon the landmark of “The flying dutchman”.
The Flying Dutchman
Van der Decken, the ship captain who cursed God and was punished and condemned to sail the seas for all of eternity, as described in the novel The Phantom Ship by Frederick Marryat, left behind his ship for tourists and visiting sailors for selfie purposes(just- kidding!)but anyhow thanks Capt.Van!
Trivia: Terneuzen is compose of a population centre named Philippine covering around 2200 residents. Maybe that’s why the crew felt at home in this place.

Being able to visit places, seeing how they live in this face of the earth and learning some of their history and norms gives you another glance at how diverse this great world is.
Ternuezen is such a cozy place to live in given the cold atmosphere mixed with light sunny weather. The locals seemed friendly and the community looks organized and peaceful. The influence of high standard living is evident though, judging from the well-architectured town halls, to monumental parks by the shore and the amazing brick structures in and out of the city.
All in all ,the shore leave was one great experience to look back to every time. Being able to visit places, seeing how they live in this face of the earth and learning some of their history and norms gives you another glance at how diverse this great world is, all that in a very short 6-hour shore leave.
This experience is another one on the log! More to share next time and after this awesome trip I realized that there is a world so vast that you need to explore and always keep in mind, Go for adventures! “Be your own Legend”!
